Carter - University of Minnesota Duluth

Carter Shoquist is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he pursued his pre-med studies with the goal of becoming a physician dedicated to helping others. After graduation, Carter took a gap year to work while applying to medical schools, and in June 2025, he was accepted into the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is enrolled in an accelerated six-year program that includes three years of classroom education followed by three years of residency training.

While Carter’s interview left a strong impression on us, it was his thoughtful introductory letter that truly captured the heart behind his journey and connection to the Ryan Lipparelli Educational Trust.

In his letter, Carter shared how much he related to Ryan through their shared passions for music, sports, and academics — interests that continue to bring meaning and balance to his own life. He expressed that learning about Ryan’s story made the Trust's mission feel deeply personal and reinforced the importance of honoring Ryan’s legacy by supporting students pursuing their dreams.

Carter also reflected on the impact the opioid epidemic has had on families and communities across the country and how Ryan’s story will stay with him throughout his medical training. As he prepares for a future in medicine, he understands that being a physician requires not only clinical knowledge but compassion, humanity, and a commitment to caring for others during their most difficult moments.

He shared that receiving support from the Trust would not only help him focus on his education and future service in the medical field but would also serve as a lasting reminder of the responsibility and empathy that should remain at the center of patient care.

Outside of his studies, Carter is an avid Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild fan — but we won’t hold that against him!
